What is the ruling on a husband who constantly swears at and insults his wife?
Swearing at and insulting one's wife is forbidden and contrary to the command to live together honourably.
Allah says: "And live with them in kindness" (4:19). In the hadith on the rights of the wife, the Prophet ﷺ forbade a husband to strike the face or to revile his wife (narrated by Abu Dawud, hasan sahih), and stressed that the best of people are those who are best to their wives (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1162). Constant insults can also count as emotional abuse under Malaysian law. A wife may remind him calmly, ask for counselling, and if it continues, complain to the Religious Affairs Office or the Syariah Court; mistreatment can also be a basis for fasakh. See Nushuz & conflict.
