💰 Family finances · #140

My late husband's employer paid his final salary and some other payments. Is all of it part of the estate?

Payments that were already the deceased's right during his lifetime, such as his final salary and outstanding allowances, are part of the estate. They must be gathered with the other property and divided according to faraid. Other payments depend on their nature. Compassionate contributions from the employer or colleagues to the family are usually a gift to the people they were meant for, not the deceased's property. Benefits paid directly to a particular recipient under a scheme's rules may also have a different status. Ask the employer for a letter detailing each payment and its purpose. Take that letter to the estate officer or the religious affairs office for their view before dividing anything. See the order of settling the deceased's affairs.
