Q&A › Worship in the home

🕌 Worship in the home · #162

My parents are too frail to fast. What about their fidyah, and can I pay it?

Elderly people who cannot fast and have no hope of being able to again replace their fasts with fidyah, not qada. Fidyah means giving staple food to the poor and needy for each day missed. Its cash rate is set by the state religious authority and may change, so check with your zakat centre or state religious office. As their child, you can help pay it with their knowledge and agreement. Put it in a way that does not make them feel a burden, for example, ‘Mak, let me take care of the fidyah this year, OK?’ Invite them to still feel Ramadan through dhikr, listening to tadarus and breaking the fast with the family. See maintenance of parents.
