Q&A › Worship in the home

🕌 Worship in the home · #158

My teenage daughter pretends to fast while on her period because she is embarrassed in front of her brothers. What should I do?

Reassure her first: menstruation is Allah's decree, and not fasting at that time is obedience, not weakness. Fasting during menstruation is not valid, and is in fact forbidden, so she needs to know that eating on those days is not wrong. Talk with her privately somewhere comfortable, without a scolding tone. Give her a space to eat and drink out of sight so that her dignity is protected. At the same time, teach her brothers not to ask questions or tease. Remind her about making up the fasts (qada), and offer to keep her company when she makes them up after Ramadan. Feeling respected at home will make her more confident in herself. See fiqh of menstruation.
