How do I keep proper boundaries with my brother-in-law at big family gatherings?

Treat your brother-in-law politely as a relative, but keep boundaries because he is not your mahram. The Prophet ﷺ gave a stern warning about being alone with the husband's relatives: “the in-law (al-hamwu) is death” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5232), because frequent mixing makes temptation easy. At large gatherings, ordinary polite interaction is fine, but avoid being alone together, private chats, or jokes that cross the line. Keep your dress and gaze as usual. This does not mean being hostile or rude; it protects everyone's honour. An understanding husband and family will respect this boundary, not take it as arrogance. See in-laws.
