What is sulh in the Syariah Court and is it compulsory?
Sulh is a process of reconciliation or negotiation conducted by a Sulh Officer at the Syariah Court to help the parties reach agreement without a trial.
It is commonly used for claims of maintenance, custody (hadhanah), mutʿah (consolatory gift), jointly acquired matrimonial property and other family matters. Both parties sit together, helped by a neutral officer, and the agreement reached can be recorded as a binding court order. Its basis is the Qur'an: "reconciliation is better" (4:128) and "make peace between your brothers" (49:10). Sulh is faster, cheaper and preserves relationships, especially for the children's sake. But it is not suitable if there is violence or fear — tell the officer if you are not safe. Detailed procedures depend on the state; see Nushuz & conflict and States.
