Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #82

My young child is afraid of the dark and has nightmares. How do I comfort them in an Islamic way?

Fear of the dark and nightmares are common at a young age because their imagination is developing fast; they need reassurance, not mockery. Do not laugh at them or force them to ‘be brave’; acknowledge their feelings first, then reassure them that they are safe. Teach the bedtime dua and short protective recitations, and explain that Allah is always looking after them. A dim night light and a favourite object beside them help. Avoid frightening stories or shows close to bedtime. When they wake up frightened, stay with them calmly until they settle. With time and a sense of safety, these fears will fade. See du'a & prayer.
