Q&A › Polygyny: the law

🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #98

I have obtained polygyny permission in Malaysia. Can the akad be held abroad?

It may be possible, but it is safer to marry in Malaysia so that the permission and registration run within one system. If the akad is held abroad, the marriage still has to be registered in Malaysia within the set period, and the religious affairs office will check the marriage documents and your permission order. Problems can arise if the wali, the marriage officer or the procedure in that country does not meet the accepted requirements. Before making any bookings, meet the state Islamic religious affairs office and ask which documents are needed. Also make sure your prospective wife and her wali understand every step.
