Q&A › Polygyny: the law

🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #90

I am not fluent in Malay. Can I get an interpreter at my husband's polygyny hearing?

Ask the court early; you have the right to understand every question and what is decided. Inform the registrar as soon as you receive the notice, and ask whether an interpreter can be provided or whether you must bring your own. Do not nod at questions you do not understand just out of embarrassment. You can say, ‘Sorry, I need an explanation in a language I understand.’ Avoid using your husband as the interpreter, because he is the party applying. If there is a document to sign, make sure its contents are explained first. Your understanding is the basis of a fair view. See women's rights.
