My husband said I am 'like his mother's back'. What is zihar?
Zihar is when a husband likens his wife to a woman who is his mahram, such as "you are to me like my mother's back"; it is forbidden and requires an expiation (kaffarah) before resuming relations.
Surah al-Mujadilah was revealed concerning Khawlah bint Tha'labah, whose husband pronounced zihar on her. Allah calls it a reprehensible and false statement.
The expiation for zihar is, in order: freeing a slave; if unable, fasting two consecutive months; if unable, feeding 60 poor people. Zihar does not effect a talaq, but the husband is forbidden to have relations with his wife until the expiation is fulfilled. Consult the Syariah Court or the religious affairs office. See talaq & divorce.
