Is a wife sinful if she asks for divorce without reason?
Yes; asking for divorce without a reasonable cause is strongly condemned in the hadith, but asking for divorce because of harm or inability to continue the marriage is permitted.
The Prophet ﷺ said that a woman who asks her husband for a divorce without reason, the scent of Paradise is forbidden to her. Yet the wife of Thabit bin Qais was allowed khulʿ because she could not fulfil her husband's rights, even though her husband was a good man.
Reasonable causes include mistreatment, neglected maintenance, and fear of being unable to keep within the limits set by Allah. Seek counselling before making a decision. See counselling.
