A husband accuses his wife of zina without witnesses. What is li'an?
Liʿan is a procedure of oaths before a judge when a husband accuses his wife of zina without four witnesses; it results in permanent separation.
The husband swears four times that he is truthful, and the fifth time invokes Allah's curse upon himself if he is lying. The wife may avert the punishment by swearing four times that the husband is lying, and the fifth time invoking Allah's wrath upon herself if he is truthful.
The effect: the couple are separated and may never remarry, and a child who is disowned is not attributed by lineage to the husband. Liʿan is carried out only in the Syariah Court. Accusing someone of zina without proof is a major sin. See talaq & divorce.
