Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #113

Should I praise my child for his exam results or for his effort?

Praise mainly his effort, attitude and honesty, because those are what he can control and keep improving. Praising only cleverness or marks can make a child afraid to try hard things for fear of failing. Say specifically what he did well, for example his diligence in revising or his courage in trying. When results are disappointing, focus on the next step, not on putting him down. Do not compare him with his siblings or friends. Remind him that Allah judges effort and intention, not only results. A child praised for effort grows up with a love of learning that does not easily break. See educating the family.
