Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #219

My in-laws often make snide remarks because we do not have children yet. How can I handle this calmly?

The provision of children is in Allah's hands, and people's remarks do not change His decree, so do not let them deepen your wound. Understand that behind the remarks there is sometimes a grandmother's longing, even if the way it is expressed hurts. You do not need to explain personal or medical matters to anyone. One calm answer such as ‘We leave it to Allah, please pray for us’ is enough to close the topic. Ask your husband to help steer the conversation away or gently correct his mother if it goes too far. Surround yourself with supportive people, and keep up your efforts and prayers without pressure. Protect your relationship as a couple from being damaged by outside pressure. See in-laws.
