Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #404

My non-Muslim family invites me to join their religious ceremonies. How do I decline respectfully?

You can decline to join the worship or religious ceremonies of other faiths firmly yet gently, because creed (akidah) cannot be compromised. Explain kindly that your religion does not allow you to worship other than in the Islamic way, and that this is not a sign you hate them. Offer to come and help with non-religious matters, such as preparing the venue or visiting afterwards, so that the bond is preserved. Avoid a tone that insults their beliefs. Choose gentle, clear words, for example: ‘I love our family; it's only the worship part that I can't join.’ For complicated situations, consult a religious officer. See interfaith.
