Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #47

Should one look into a prospective spouse's family background?

Yes, looking at the family background is sensible, because lineage is among the factors mentioned by the Prophet ﷺ and will affect married life.
The hadith of the four criteria mentions lineage (hasab), and it is also part of kafa'ah (compatibility) in the Shafi'i school. Family shapes a person's values, way of communicating and expectations; you will also be in close contact with in-laws. But do not judge someone merely for the mistakes of their family members — Allah affirms that no one bears the sin of another (al-An'am 6:164). Assess the person first, then consider the family dynamics. See Criteria.
