Dying abroad: is it better to be buried there or brought home?
The sunnah is to hasten the preparation and burial of the deceased, based on the hadith "Hasten with the funeral". Many scholars therefore recommend that the deceased be buried where they died if there is a Muslim cemetery and proper arrangements. Some scholars permit moving the body to another country if there is a benefit and it does not cause the body to deteriorate or be delayed too long, but the cost is high and it can delay the burial. Funeral costs are taken from the estate before debts. For Malaysian Muslims abroad, contact the embassy and the local Muslim association. Consider takaful that covers funeral costs.
Difference of madhhab. The Shafi'i school considers it disliked (makruh) to move a body before burial except to Makkah, Madinah or Jerusalem (Baitulmaqdis); other schools are more lenient where there is a benefit (maslahat).
