🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #145
I have an old sin that I have repented from. Do I need to tell my future spouse about it?
In general, a sin that has been repented from need not be disclosed, because Islam encourages you to cover your own faults. But there is an important exception: matters that have a real effect on your future spouse's rights must be disclosed. Examples are an infectious disease, a child from a past relationship, large debts, or a previous marital status. Hiding things like these is deception that can damage the marriage at its foundation. Other mistakes that have left no effect on anyone, keep between you and Allah, and stay steadfast. If your future spouse asks directly, do not lie; you can say, ‘There are things in my past that I have left behind and repented from.’ If in doubt, consult a trusted ustaz confidentially. See a future spouse's past.
