My future spouse has a dark past. Should I go ahead?
If they have truly repented and are now steadfast, their past should not be an obstacle; Allah accepts repentance and erases sins.
Islam encourages concealing faults that have been left behind; a person is not obliged to disclose past sins that Allah has concealed, and the Prophet ﷺ censured those who publicise their own sins. Assess their present state: prayer, honesty, the company they keep, and evidence of change. If the past still has present consequences — such as debts, addiction, an infectious disease or dependent children — it must be discussed honestly. The verse an-Nur 24:3 is understood by many scholars to refer to fornicators who have not repented. Pray istikharah and seek advice from people of knowledge.
