Is the jewellery my husband bought for me part of his estate after he dies?
If the jewellery was given to you as a gift or as mahr, it is fully yours and not part of your husband's estate. Problems arise when the intention behind a gift is unclear, for example the husband bought gold as family savings but you were the one wearing it. In that situation, other heirs may dispute its status. Gather whatever evidence there is, such as receipts, your husband's messages saying it was a gift, or witnesses who heard him. If the other heirs do not agree, do not fight over it at home; leave it to the Syariah Court to assess. For couples still living, the best way is to state the intention behind every major gift clearly from the start. See mahr (dower).
