I am from southern Thailand and my husband is Malaysian. Which language should we use with our children?
Use both languages consistently; children are able to grow up with two languages. One common approach is for each parent to speak their own language with the child. For example, you use Thai or your hometown dialect, while your husband uses Bahasa Melayu. Do not worry if your child mixes words from the two languages at first; that is normal. The mother tongue helps your child get to know their grandparents and relatives in your hometown. Provide books and songs in both languages, and visit family there when you can. If you have concerns about your child's speech development, see a paediatrician. See Muslim families in Thailand.
