Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #154

As a father, how do I heal the heart of my teenager who was hurt after I took another wife?

A teenager's trust is rebuilt through consistent presence, not through gifts or big promises. A child at this age judges actions, not words, so keep every small promise you make to him. Set aside time specifically for him that is not shared with other business, and be fully present without a phone in your hand. Apologise sincerely for the pain he feels, without making excuses. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5997); love shown again and again will soften his heart. Be patient if he rejects you at first, and keep showing up. See children in polygyny.
