My child saw their father hitting me. What is the effect and what should be done?
A child who witnesses domestic violence is also a victim, and protection and emotional support for them are as important as your own safety.
Research shows that such children are at risk of anxiety, sleep problems, depression and repeating the pattern of violence. Steps: ensure safety (call the police 999, Talian Kasih 15999), explain to the child in simple language that it is not their fault, keep up routines, and get child counselling through a hospital, the JKM or the school. Protection orders under the Domestic Violence Act 1994 can cover the children. In the Syariah Court, the child's safety is a primary consideration in custody (hadhanah).
