🌍 Children, inheritance & global · #119

I was divorced when my child was still a baby and I kept breastfeeding him. Am I entitled to payment for breastfeeding?

Yes; after the waiting period (iddah) ends, a divorced mother who continues to breastfeed her child is entitled to ask the father for a breastfeeding wage. Islam recognises breastfeeding as valuable work, not merely a mother's instinctive duty. This wage is separate from child maintenance (nafkah), which the father still bears for the baby's needs such as nappies, clothing and medical care. Discuss a reasonable amount according to the father's means, and record the agreement. Allah says: “by mutual consent and consultation between the two” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:233). If there is no agreement, the Syariah Court can decide it. Look after your own health and nutrition throughout the breastfeeding period. See child maintenance.
