A Malaysian wants to marry in Singapore: what should they know?
A marriage in Singapore through ROMM requires an applicant with Singpass: ROMM's official process chart provides a track for marriages between a Singapore citizen or permanent resident and a foreign national, and since April 2025 every application must include supporting documents. List of marital status documents for foreign nationals (please check on the ROMM website). A Malaysian husband who already has a wife needs the permission of his state Syariah Court in Malaysia; ROMM will also investigate his marital status. Do not hide an existing wife — that is deception and can be an offence in both countries. ROMM does not allow a person who declares that he is already married abroad to marry in Singapore until that foreign marriage is dissolved. After the akad, register the marriage within six months, either before a Registrar abroad after the date of the marriage or before a Registrar in the state after first returning (Act 303 s.31; the other state enactments checked also set six months, including Sarawak s.29; Terengganu s.29 sets two months after first arriving in Malaysia, according to an unofficial copy of the 2017 text). Marriage does not give an automatic right of residence. See Singapore.
