What can prevent someone from inheriting their family's property?

In the Syafi'i school, the main impediments are a difference of religion and killing the person one would inherit from. A Muslim does not inherit from a non-Muslim, and vice versa. An heir who kills the person he would inherit from also loses his right, so that no one pursues an inheritance by wrongdoing. There are also things often thought to be impediments that in fact are not: a disobedient child, a wife living separately, or an heir living far away still inherits. If your family is unsure about an heir's status, do not decide it yourselves in a family meeting. Take the question to the Syariah Court when applying for the faraid certificate so the decision is fair and binding. See faraid in the family.
