Forms in the country where we live ask for a ‘family name’. How do we write our child's name when it uses bin or binti?

Write your child's name exactly as on their birth certificate and passport, so that all documents stay consistent. The Malay naming system using bin or binti does not always match forms that ask for a family name. Some families put the father's name in that field, but the accepted way differs between countries and agencies. Ask the office that issued the form and the Malaysian embassy before filling it in, and note down the method you use. Do not drop bin or binti from Malaysian documents, because it shows the child's lineage (nasab). Use the same spelling every time so that there are no problems when renewing passports or registering for school. See the child's lineage (nasab).
