In Egypt, is the first wife told when her husband marries again?
Yes. Under article 11 bis of Law 25/1929 (amended by Law 100/1985), the husband must state his marital status in the marriage contract, along with the name and address of each existing wife, and the ma'dhun must inform the existing wife by registered letter. The wife may seek divorce if she suffers material or moral harm making it impossible to live together, even if there is no condition in the contract; this right lapses one year from the date she learned of the marriage, or earlier if she consents. Polygyny is not considered harm in itself — harm must be proven. A new wife who did not know her husband was already married may also seek divorce. Giving false information can be punished with a fine and imprisonment (article 23 bis). See Middle East.
