Why do women need a wali to marry when men do not? Is that fair?
In the Shafi'i school, the wali is a protector who helps a woman make a major decision, not a sign that she has less intellect or fewer rights. Your consent still counts, and the marriage officer will make sure you are willing before the contract. A wali also has no right to block a marriage without a reason recognised by Islamic law. If he refuses unreasonably, the Syariah Court can allow a wali hakim. So that authority comes with responsibility, and there are checks on it. The wali also stands as the family's witness that the man is known and responsible. If this question still weighs on your heart, discuss it with an ustazah you trust; understanding the wisdom behind it often brings relief. See women's rights.
