⚖️ Polygyny: rulings & justice · #89

Since wanting to practise polygyny, I find myself starting to neglect my first wife. What does it mean?

Neglecting your existing wife is a clear sign you are not yet ready to be just, because justice begins even before the second akad. If your heart has already leaned so far that your first wife feels sidelined, polygyny will only worsen that injustice. The Prophet ﷺ warned: whoever has two wives and “inclines towards one of them, he will come on the Day of Resurrection with one side of his body leaning” (Sunan Abu Dawud 2133). Restore your wife's rights now: time, attention and maintenance (nafkah). If you cannot be just when you have only just formed the intention, that is a sign to stop and reflect, not to go ahead. See rights of husband and wife.
