We are still grieving. Should the estate matters be put off for now?

It is fine to give yourselves room to grieve, as long as important matters are not left too long. Some things should be done promptly: the funeral arrangements, settling the deceased's debts, and making sure the widow and children are provided for. Dividing the property can wait a little until hearts are calmer. But a delay of years invites problems: documents get lost, heirs die and suspicions grow. Appoint a family representative to start gathering documents slowly, without burdening the family members who are grieving most. Set a date together for the first heirs' meeting. Allah says: “Seek help through patience and prayer” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:153). See delayed estates.
