My husband's salary is small and feels insufficient. What does maintenance according to one's means mean?

Maintenance (nafkah) is judged by the husband's real means, not by other people's lifestyles, so what is required is honest and modest effort. Allah says: “Let the one who has means spend according to his means; and whoever's provision is restricted, let him spend from what Allah has given him” (Surah at-Talaq 65:7). The husband should strive to increase his provision lawfully, while the wife can be accommodating and help plan spending. Cut back on wants, prioritise needs, and avoid debt to fund a lifestyle. If things are truly tight, consider zakat assistance. See maintenance guide.
