📜 Akad nikah · #92

Can the mahr be given as gold, land or other valuables instead of cash?

Yes; a mahr is valid with anything that has value, is halal and can be handed over. Gold, land, a vehicle or household essentials can all be a mahr. What matters is that it is stated clearly, for example ‘a gold necklace weighing so many grams’ or ‘a plot of land on lot such-and-such’. For land or assets that must be registered, make sure the transfer of ownership to the wife is actually done after the contract. Otherwise it is easily forgotten and can lead to disputes. Keep the receipts and documents with your marriage certificate. Ask the marriage officer how to record it on the marriage form. See other forms of mahr.
