🧭 Region & Middle East · #67

My family is uneasy because my wife-to-be comes from Indonesia. How do I reassure them?

First listen to what they are really worried about, because behind the objection there is usually a fear that can be answered. Some parents worry about customs, distance from family or bad stories they have heard, not about your future wife as a person. Introduce them to your wife-to-be and, if possible, to her family, so that what they come to know is a person, not a label. The main measure in choosing a spouse is religion and character, not country of origin. Allah says: “let not a group of people ridicule other people” (Surah al-Hujurat 49:11). Give them time and avoid arguing; a blessing that comes late is better than one that is forced. See kafa'ah.
