🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #136

How do I tell my parents that my marriage is going to end in divorce?

Choose a calm time, tell them face to face, and share your decision without exposing every fault of your spouse. Your parents may be shocked, sad or angry, especially if they did not know about the problems all this time. Start with clear words, for example: ‘Mum, Dad, I need to share something heavy. We have tried, but we are going to separate.’ Explain what you need from them, whether support, a temporary place to stay or help looking after the children. Do not let them go on treating your ex-spouse as an enemy, because the children's relationship with their grandparents on both sides still matters. Give them time to accept it. See family and in-laws.
