⚖️ Polygyny: rulings & justice · #149

My future husband has asked me to sign a letter giving up my rights to maintenance and the rota before we marry. Should I agree?

Do not sign before you truly understand the consequences; a request like this often signals that he is not yet able to fulfil his obligations. A wife may, willingly, give up part of her rights such as her turn in certain situations. But giving up maintenance (nafkah) as a condition of being married is a serious matter, and its effect on you and your future children must be weighed carefully. Ask him directly: ‘If you can't yet support me, why do we need to marry now?’ Consult an officer at the religious affairs office or a syarie lawyer before deciding anything. See when maintenance lapses.
