What the court looks at
- The iqrar of the application must state the applicant's present income, particulars of his commitments and financial obligations, and the number of his dependants, including persons who would become his dependants as a result of the proposed marriage (s.23(4) of the State enactments; Act 303: s.23(3)).
- The Court must be satisfied that the applicant has the means to support, as required by Hukum Syarak, all his wives and dependants, not only the new wife.
- According to the Procedure by state page, common reasons for an application failing include net income that is not enough after deductions, an applicant in an AKPK debt management programme, and no witnesses supporting the applicant's means.
- Documents commonly requested: the latest 3 months' salary slips, bank statements or income tax forms. The Pahang and Perak forms also ask for proposed maintenance for each wife and child.

With these figures, spending is more than income. The shortfall will be borne by one of the households, or by debt.
