Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #92

Should children be given pocket money, and how can it be used to teach responsibility?

Pocket money managed with guidance is a good tool of tarbiyah (upbringing) for teaching trustworthiness and moderation. Give a reasonable, fixed amount, then teach the child to divide it into three: for spending, for saving, and for charity. Let him feel the consequences if he overspends early, so that he learns to plan. Praise him when he saves or gives charity without being told. Avoid making money a reward for everything or a tool of control. Explain that provision is a trust from Allah and we will be asked how we used it. See educating the family.
