My husband, who has a mental illness, pronounced talaq. Does the talaq take effect?
Talaq does not take effect if the husband had truly lost his reason when he pronounced it, but the degree of his condition must be assessed carefully. Some patients are still aware and understand what they say, and some are not. This is not something for the family to decide by themselves. Take the matter to the Syariah Court, and prepare a report from a doctor or psychiatrist on your husband's condition at the time. While you wait, arrange your husband's treatment and look after your own wellbeing; caring for a sick spouse is very draining. If your husband acts out of control to the point of threatening life, call the police on 999 immediately. For support and advice, call Talian Kasih 15999. Read the explanation in mental health.
