Q&A › Polygyny: the law

🏛️ Polygyny: the law · #84

I am afraid of facing my husband and the prospective co-wife in court. How do I prepare myself?

That fear is natural, and you can plan the day so that it feels more under control. Arrive early with someone you trust, and sit where you feel comfortable. You are not obliged to talk at length with the prospective co-wife or her family; a brief, polite greeting is enough. Prepare one phrase to end a tense conversation, for example ‘I will tell the judge everything.’ The night before, get enough sleep and ease your heart with prayer. Allah says: “Remember that in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest” (Surah ar-Ra'd 13:28). When it is over, give yourself time to rest and cry if you need to. See mental health.
