⚖️ Polygyny: rulings & justice · #106
Is it true that polygyny may not be undertaken if it harms the existing wife?
The permissibility of polygyny does not allow anyone to harm his wife; the principle of preventing harm still applies. About divorced wives, Allah says: “do not retain them to harm them” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:231); the principle is clear, a right may not be made a tool for hurting. If polygyny is planned to pressure, punish or abandon a wife, that intention and method are corrupt. If you are considering it, assess its effect on your wife honestly and discuss it openly with her. This does not mean a wife can absolutely block her husband's right, but neither may a husband hide behind permissibility to do wrong. For binding disputes, the Syariah Court is the place that assesses the real situation of both parties. See conditions of polygyny.
