What is the ruling on relations with one's wife during the day in Ramadan?
It is forbidden and breaks the fast; the one who does it must make up the fast, repent and pay a heavy expiation (kaffarah).
Marital intimacy is permitted only on the nights of Ramadan. A man who deliberately has intercourse during the day in Ramadan incurs expiation: freeing a slave; if unable, fasting two consecutive months; if unable, feeding 60 poor people. Foreplay that causes ejaculation also breaks the fast but without expiation according to the Shafi'is. A wife who was forced is not sinful. See Marital etiquette.

Difference between schools. Shafi'i: the expiation (kaffarah) is on the husband only. Hanafi and Maliki: a willing wife must also pay expiation. Hanbali: there are two narrations on expiation for a willing wife.
