Polygynous marriage in Thailand not registered — how do I register the child with the father's name?
If the marriage is valid under the Shariah, the child's lineage is still traced to the father, but registration requires proof of a recognised marriage. The usual steps: the couple must have the marriage confirmed and registered at the state Syariah Court/religious affairs office, which may involve prosecution for practising polygyny without permission and payment of a fine. Once the marriage is registered, the marriage certificate is used to register or amend the father's details at the JPN. Delay makes things difficult for the child in matters of schooling, inheritance, wali and maintenance. That is why polygyny should go through official channels from the start.
