Dalam mazhab Syafi'i, susuan menjadikan mahram jika berlaku lima kali susuan yang berasingan dan mengenyangkan, ketika bayi berumur di bawah dua tahun . Saidatina Aisyah meriwayatkan bahawa ketetapan akhir ialah lima kali susuan yang diketahui. Susuan menjadikan mahram sebagaimana nasab: ibu susuan, suami ibu susuan, dan anak-anak mereka menjadi mahram. How many breastfeedings make someone mahram?

In the Shafi'i school, breastfeeding makes a person mahram if there are five separate, satisfying feeds while the baby is under two years old.
Sayyidah Aisyah narrated that the final ruling was five known feeds. Breastfeeding makes people mahram just as lineage does: the foster mother, her husband and their children become mahram. If the number or the age is in doubt, consult the mufti or religious affairs office before marrying, especially for adopted children or milk banks. See Mahram.

Difference between schools. The Hanafi and Maliki schools hold that a little or a lot of breastfeeding already makes a person mahram.
