The marriage journey, from readiness to inheritance
The Prophet's ﷺ final counsel about women
In his sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage, before his community, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ urged that women be protected and treated well:
فاتقوا الله في النساء فإنكم أخذتموهن بأمان الله واستحللتم فروجهن بكلمة الله … ولهن عليكم رزقهن وكسوتهن بالمعروف
"Fear Allah concerning women. You have taken them as a trust from Allah, and they became lawful to you by the word of Allah. … And their right over you is their provision and clothing, in a reasonable manner."
ألا واستوصوا بالنساء خيرا فإنما هن عوان عندكم
"Indeed, I enjoin you to treat women well, for they are in your care."

Polygyny: the basics you need to understand
The source of every figure is given in its box · see Statistics and the table of 14 state laws
Court permission comes before the akad
Polygyny in Malaysia requires the prior written permission of the Syariah Court. Marrying without it is an offence under state enactments — even if the marriage is valid in Islamic law.
Islamic Family Law Enactment · every stateFour conditions — all of them, not just one
The Syariah Court grants permission only if it is satisfied on all four of these matters. If one fails, the application fails.
- 1Just or necessaryThe proposed marriage is just or necessary.
- 2Financial abilityThe applicant has the means to provide.
- 3Ability to treat wives equallyThe applicant is able to accord equal treatment to all his wives as required by Hukum Syarak.
- 4No darar syarie (harm)The proposed marriage will not cause darar syarie (harm) to the existing wife.
Seven steps, in the right order
Four of them take place in court. The marriage comes only after permission.
