HIRING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students are eligible to participate in internship and job opportunities through two programs: Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CPT AND OPT?
CPT may be authorized under certain circumstances for temporary employment, such as an internship or cooperative education (Co-Op) experience prior to graduation. Such an experience must be part of the student’s curriculum and can be paid or unpaid, part-time or full-time.
OPT is a program that temporarily allows international students with an F-1 visa (student visa) to work up to 12 months in the United States in relation to their major field of study. Students can participate in OPT either before or after graduation.
STEM STUDENTS AND OPT: Students who receive a degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields may be eligible for an additional 24-month extension of OPT. Students are able to verify their eligibility through our Office of International Student Services.
EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITIES
Both CPT and OPT are processed through our Office of International Student Services in coordination with the student and faculty where applicable. Employers do not have to make contact with the US government during any of these programs. What employers need to provide students:

A CPT Site letter, printed on official business letterhead and containing the following details:
- Job title and brief job description
- Exact dates of employment (start and end dates)
- Number of hours of work per week (e.g. 40 hour per week)
- Physical address of place of employment
- Name of Supervisor
