The event, hosted by Andrews’ STEM Division in partnership with the Lake Union Office of Education, provided an opportunity for teachers to engage in collaborative lab experiences and to equip themselves with new teaching tools.</p> <p> With support from a $60,000 grant provided by the Versacare Foundation, the event covered all expenses for the educators, including accommodations, meals and STEM resource kits for their schools. The kits, customized for different grade levels, contained materials for science, math and physics experiments, allowing teachers to implement the knowledge gained at the event in their classrooms immediately.</p> <p> Monica Nudd, the event coordinator, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the day. "This grant was in collaboration with the Lake Union Office of Education, which wanted to boost STEM programs across five conferences. We aimed to create an experience where teachers could be hands-on in our labs and take what they learned back to their classrooms,” Nudd shared.</p> <p> Ruth Horton, EdD, director of education for the Lake Union Conference, spoke to the importance of providing educators with the tools to engage their students in STEM learning. "We want educators to be as best equipped as possible to provide STEM opportunities, starting from elementary through high school, so that students are exposed to these fields early on,” she said.</p> <p> The event’s agenda was packed with various lab sessions and lectures led by �պ�AV professors. Teachers participated in activities such as chemistry, math and physics labs, learning new techniques to make STEM education more interactive and accessible. One of the highlights was the “<a href="/cas/stem/invent/index.html">Mission: Invent</a>” session, where educators collaborated on creative problem-solving tasks. The “Mission: Invent” program at Andrews teaches basic engineering and design thinking skills to K–12 students.</p> <p> Deirdre Garnett, superintendent of schools for the Lake Region Conference, enjoyed the event’s energy and collaborative spirit. Garnett shared, "This was a great day. It was hands-on, filled with movement, and exactly how we want our children to learn. We're excited to take these ideas back and work towards creating STEM centers in each of our schools.”</p> <p> Teachers like Kalicia Clements from Charlotte Adventist Christian School appreciated the practical approach of the day. "I loved that we could participate in activities our students would be doing, and everything was so hands-on. These simple yet profound experiments will help our students develop critical thinking and collaboration skills.”</p> <p> The event also included a tour of �պ�AV’s Agriculture Education Center as well as a series of breakout sessions designed to create a deeper understanding of STEM concepts. Teachers left with not only new ideas but also the tools and confidence to transform their classrooms into dynamic STEM learning environments.</p> <p> Nudd summarized the event by stating, "This was a day for teachers to stretch themselves and grow so that they can better prepare their students for the future." Moreover, several of Andrews’ academic programs were identified as among the best in the nation, including biology, business, computer science, history, music, physical therapy, psychology and religion.</p> <p> The Niche ranking is based on a detailed analysis of educational data measuring the academic quality and financial value of the university as well as a comprehensive student review system. Based on these, Niche assigned Andrews “A” grades in many key areas, including academics, value, diversity, professors, campus food and safety.</p> <p> More than 500 students and alumni shared their experiences at Andrews with Niche. Forward in Mission!’” says John Wesley Taylor V, president.</p> <p> On Aug. 24, 1874, Battle Creek College held its first classes in the Review and Herald building in Battle Creek, MI. To commemorate the anniversary of the first Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning, Pastor Shane Anderson led a special service at Pioneer Memorial Church, honoring the commitment of those who founded the school while calling Adventists today to engage the church’s mission to reach the world with God’s love “at any cost.”</p> <p> The high Sabbath continued with a tour of Sutherland House, the only original campus building still standing. More than focusing on the architecture, tour guide Ronald Knott, director of the �պ�AV Press, which now operates in the building, shared stories of faith and commitment exemplified by the Adventist pioneers who gave all for their work. One example shared was Percy Magan, who turned down the opportunity to build significant wealth working with John Harvey Kellogg and instead remained focused on the critical area of Adventist education.</p> <p> Similar stories of faithful service continued during a tour of the Rosehill Cemetery, a place of rest for many who contributed significantly to the legacy of �պ�AV. Jim Ford, associate director of the Center for Adventist Research, and Meredith Jones Gray, professor emerita of English and University historian, led groups through the cemetery, highlighting the extraordinary dedication of those who founded the school in faith and supported Adventist education more broadly.</p> <p> <strong>School History</strong></p> <p> Twenty-five years after its humble beginnings as Battle Creek College, in the fall of 1901, the school was moved by railcar across the state to Berrien Springs, where it was renamed Emmanuel Missionary College.</p> <p> In 1958, the General Conference Autumn Council voted to move the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary as well as Potomac University to Berrien Springs, leading in 1960 to the new name, �պ�AV.</p> <p> In September of 1874, just one month after the founding of Battle Creek College, John Nevins Andrews and his two teenage children had traveled to Europe as the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s first official international missionaries. At the time, J.N. Andrews was the leading Seventh-day Adventist scholar; the new community had sent one of their best to help spread the faith abroad. Because of his commitment to mission and to developing one’s intellect, J.N. Andrews remains an inspiring figure as the University’s namesake.</p> <p> <strong>Upcoming Events</strong></p> <p> Honoring the 150th anniversary will continue throughout the school year. The program, known as Renaissance Kids, is Moreno's brainchild, created in 1997. Over the years, the camp has evolved, incorporating suggestions from parents and community members, into an initiative that not only teaches architectural principles but also engages participants in life lessons and real-world construction projects.</p> <p> Moreno, who holds a master’s degree in architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington, has been shaping young minds at �պ�AV since 1996. His journey into architecture began in an unexpected way, as he was initially uncertain about his career path. Inspired by his sister’s passion for the field and his own experiences with architecture drafting classes in high school, however, Moreno found his calling.</p> <p> "I didn't have a clue going in," Moreno recalls. "But the first architecture class I took, I just loved it, and I never turned back." The course focused on how architecture impacts people both individually and collectively.</p> <p> Moreno’s dedication to architecture and education has been evident throughout his career, leading him to work for various architecture firms and ultimately to engage in teaching positions that have influenced countless students. His passion for making a difference in the community has been a driving force behind the Renaissance Kids program, which he first conceived as a side job to earn extra income for his growing family. After taking a hiatus that began in 1998, Moreno restarted the camp in 2007 with a renewed passion to connect �պ�AV with the greater community.</p> <p> Renaissance Kids is more than just a summer camp; it offers an immersive experience during which children explore architecture through hands-on activities and real-world construction projects. Over the years, the program has evolved in complexity, with participants creating everything from small-scale models to full-sized community structures.</p> <p> The camp has made significant contributions to the community, including building sitting spaces and art-adorned masonry pillars at the Curious Kids Discovery Zone, Curious Kids Museum and Krasl Art Center. In 2018 and 2019, Renaissance Kids participants supported a fundraising campaign by the Saint Augustine's Episcopal Church’s youth group. Over the two summers, they designed and built playhouses, dog houses and artwork to help construct a home for a family in need.</p> <p> This year, in partnership with the Benton Harbor CDC's Outside the Lines Summer Camp, Renaissance Kids worked on a particularly meaningful project: building a pergola in the local Flourish Garden. "It is so cool to see these kids getting their hands dirty, building a pergola in the community garden," Moreno says. "They did it like champs. The camp provides mentoring, sports training and leadership skills under its 400 B.L.A.C.K Mentoring Program, which focuses on building leaders and cultivating kinship. Camp counselor Kevin Moore explains, “The camp prepares students to be comfortable with stepping outside of the box.”</p> <p> Outside the Lines targets youth eight to 14 years of age in an effort to decrease youth violence and build youth leaders within the community. Jay McCree, family engagement specialist for the 400 B.L.A.C.K Mentoring Program, says, “The camp is another way for kids to get out of the house and become more involved in their community.”</p> <p> The collaboration between Renaissance Kids and the Benton Harbor CDC is a significant step toward engaging the community’s youth in meaningful, creative activities. The partnership reflects the shared goal of both organizations: to provide opportunities that nurture leadership, creativity and a sense of community among young people.</p> <p> Ashley Hines, the executive director for the Benton Harbor CDC, was instrumental in bringing this partnership to life. Hines reached out to Moreno with the idea of merging the two programs, and their collaboration has since flourished. "Ashley is a champion," Moreno says. "She’s a great connector, and she’s an inspiration. I can’t say enough nice things about her."</p> <p> Nick Blue, program director for the 400 B.L.A.C.K Mentoring Program, emphasizes the importance of this partnership in enhancing the camp’s offerings. "For the past three years, we’ve partnered with different entities in the community, and this year, adding Renaissance Kids was huge," he says. "Professor Mark Moreno brought his expertise, and we were able to merge it with our Outside the Lines camp to create something awesome."</p> <p> Adding meaningful depth to the experience, the campers worked alongside professionals in the architecture field. Specifically, Larry Jackson, local construction teacher and high school football coach, and Carl Stigall, of Stigall Concrete, participated in the camp, both exuding a passion for their work, love for kids and giving hearts for the community.</p> <p> The impact of these projects extends beyond the participants, as they contribute to the broader goal of revitalizing and improving the Benton Harbor community. This year’s camp offered more than just an introduction to architecture; it provided campers with the tools to build a better future for themselves and their community.</p> <p> Camper Jayde Hurst, who has attended the Outside the Lines camp for the past three years, shared her enthusiasm, saying, "What I enjoy most about OTL camp is the chance to do fun activities and meet new friends. Aboard a Piper aircraft at the �պ�AV Airpark, Swem, a longtime funeral director at Starks Family Funeral Homes and respected community member, relived his passion for flying.</p> <p> The event was coordinated by Dana Wales, a member of the �պ�AV Board of Trustees and a friend of Swem's. "When I heard about Dick’s wish, I knew the folks at �պ�AV would step up to make it happen," Wales said. "It’s a beautiful example of what we can achieve when we work together."</p> <p> Swem's connection to aviation dates back to his youth. "I took flight lessons about 70 years ago, and I’ve always wanted to take the controls again," Swem said. Reflecting on the experience of being back in the cockpit, Swem shared enthusiastically, "Today is a day I’ll never forget. It’s wonderful to feel the plane beneath my hands again."</p> <p> Swem and Gary Blied, senior flight instructor at �պ�AV and a fellow veteran with a distinguished career in both the U.S. Air Force and American Airlines, shared piloting duties. Blied praised Swem's skills, saying, "He’s still got it. It’s an honor and a humbling experience to fly with someone from the greatest generation. Dick handled the plane like a pro."</p> <p> The flight was also a family experience. Swem’s grandson, Patrick, joined him in the sky. Patrick reminisced about their shared memories, stating, "Grandpa took me flying when I was just 10. It’s one of those experiences you never forget. Being here today, seeing him so happy, it’s priceless." He added, "Seeing everyone come together to make this happen for him, it’s incredibly moving.”</p> <p> The morning was not only about fulfilling a personal dream but also a testament to the community honoring a veteran that served the country. The Berrien Springs Oronoko Fire Department marked the occasion with a water cannon salute as Swem landed the plane, a surprise arranged by the Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Fire Department.</p> <p> Police Chief Paul Toliver expressed the community's sentiments, stating, "It’s awesome. We don’t do enough for those who served our country. This salute is just a small way of showing our appreciation to Mr. Swem for his service."</p> <p> The flight was a heartfelt tribute to a man whose life has been marked by service, family and community. The focus for this year’s conference was “Understanding Diverse Families” and included keynote speakers Elaine and Willie Oliver and Arlyn Drew.</p> <p> This year, for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was held in person, with participants from around the world attending both on campus and online. John Wesley Taylor V, University president, gave the official welcome, acknowledging that God not only created family but also diversity. He challenged attendees with the task of studying and understanding both. In a video presentation, Ted N. C. Wilson, president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, offered a warm welcome to participants and encouraged them to help families build on the principles of God’s Word for greater relationship health and to be powerful witnesses for the truth.</p> <p> Wagner Kuhn, associate dean of the Seminary and now the University’s interim chief academic officer, also brought greetings via video, welcoming participants to the Seminary and commending them for their important work on behalf of families.</p> <p> Jasmine Fraser, professor and director of the doctoral program in discipleship and lifespan education at the Seminary, explained that the conference is a combined effort of the Seminary, the �պ�AV School of Social Work, the Institute for Prevention of Addictions, the North American Division Department of Family Ministries and the General Conference Department of Family Ministries.</p> <p> The conference was created in the summer of 1975 by John and Millie Youngberg, professors in the School of Education at �պ�AV, with the intention of building stronger and healthier families in the context of the church. They aimed to provide professionals with “the opportunity to be exposed to best practice strategies and research in the areas of family ministries, family studies, family counseling/therapy, social work and psychology in order to enhance ministry to families in the Seventh-day Adventist Church and beyond.”</p> <p> The first set of keynote presentations came from Elaine and Willie Oliver, the General Conference directors of Family Ministries. The Olivers have shared experience leading marriage conferences and relationship seminars and hosting leadership training conferences in Family Ministries around the world. Willie Oliver holds degrees in theology, pastoral counseling and sociology, and Elaine Oliver has degrees in clinical mental health counseling, counseling psychology, higher education and educational psychology.</p> <p> Their presentation, titled “The Demography of Difference: Challenges and Opportunities for Ministry to Families,” addressed the global reality of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the demography of difference among families in the church, which poses challenges to effective ministry since one size does not fit all and there is a need to be mindful of these differences. They also noted that while God’s ideal for marriage and family relationships has not changed, family types and structures in the modern world are constantly changing—including the rising rates of intercultural marriages, single-parent families, blended families, childless couples, multigenerational households, immigrant and transnational families, same-sex partnerships, families experiencing neurodivergence, and variations due to socioeconomic factors.</p> <p> The Olivers shared the need to be mindful of the “two hands approach” to family ministries in the church. This approach is based on the “understanding that Scripture holds in tension God’s divine ideals on one hand, and the reality of human brokenness on the other hand,” Elaine Oliver explained. She emphasized that each individual or family’s unique experiences contribute to who they are today and advocated for approaching family ministries with understanding, grace and compassion, without setting aside the ideals God established in Eden.</p> <p> The afternoon consisted of smaller breakout sessions. Discussion topics included the development of children’s growth mindsets, challenges and opportunities of multigenerational households, family communication patterns and youth mental health, divine attachment theory, narrative discipleship, premarital education, love marriages and arranged marriages in biblical and sociocultural contexts, and trauma-informed communication in family practice. The breakout sessions were presented by faculty from the Seminary and the School of Social Work, chaplains, counselors, pastors, church leaders and clinical trauma specialists.</p> <p> The second set of keynote presentations came from Arlyn Drew, adjunct professor of systematic theology and Christian philosophy at the Seminary. Drew holds degrees in medicine, business administration and theology. One avenue of reflection has existed since 2002 in the creation and publishing of "As We Set Forth," written by Meredith Jones Gray, professor emerita of English at Andrews. This book was the first volume in the Andrews Heritage series, and now a second volume by Jones Gray titled "Forward in Faith" will pick up from when �պ�AV came into being. The book will be unveiled to the public on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, during the �պ�AV 2024 Alumni Homecoming Banquet.</p> <p> "Forward in Faith" provides a comprehensive overview of �պ�AV’s history from 1960 to 1990 from various perspectives, including administrative history, the history of student life, academic development, campus culture and more. According to Pat Spangler, who assisted with production and image selection for the book, the title is derived from the following quote by Richard L. Hammill:</p> <p style="margin-left: 40px;"> Because our denominational leaders have noted the increase in the number of people who are seeking to obtain higher education, they have moved forward in faith and established our own university so that our youth may obtain higher education within an Adventist environment.</p> <p> Hammill became the president of Andrews in 1963, only four years after the institution became a university following the merger of Potomac University, the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary and Emmanuel Missionary College. Hammill and others recognized the significance and necessity of continued academic excellence catering to the Seventh-day Adventist community so that the church at large could be strengthened and pushed "forward in faith."</p> <p> Telling Andrews' history in such a format is important due to the many stories the University has gathered over 150 years and their overall significance to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. When the school was known as Battle Creek College in 1874, it was the first Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning. Many consider Andrews the flagship educational institution of the church, making it even more vital to record its history.</p> <p> The goal of the book is for readers to understand the importance of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s commitment to education. Jones Gray says, "Another takeaway should be the vision and dedication of the people who have kept the school going all these years through hard times and good times, the sacrifice and hard work of the students who have come to school at Andrews and its ancestors, and how God has led in the development of the University."</p> <p> "As We Set Forth" highlights 1874 to 1959, the period of Battle Creek College and Emmanuel Missionary College, predecessors to �պ�AV.
