30 Years of Service: Paul Ray

   Employee Awards 2024 | Posted on March 7, 2024

I have known Paul now for several decades—first as a student, then as a colleague. As a professor of archaeology, Paul has shown a superb mastery of his specialties and is an excellent teacher. His meticulous attention to detail makes him essential on dissertation committees and a desired partner on any research project—his presence guarantees high quality work. Paul also makes invaluable contributions in archaeological field work. As a co-director of our various projects in Jordan, he oversees field work and processes valuable artifacts. At the Institute of Archaeology, he directs the publication department and serves as the de facto curator for the Siegfried H. Horn Museum.

Paul literally knows where all the skeletons are hidden in the various museum closets and cabinets—and all the other artifacts too! While his professional demeanor typically reveals a quiet, serious person, his close friends have been privileged to see his amazing sense of humor. I have heard him recite almost the entire dialogue of a Monte Python comedy, down to the various voices used in the film.

I am very proud of Paul’s contributions and happy to count him as a valued colleague and friend at the Institute of Archaeology and the Department of Old Testament.
