Erno Gyeresi Obituary
1960–2015

Erno Gyeresi, 54, died peacefully on Saturday afternoon, January 31, at his home in Niles, Michigan, with his family by his side. Erno’s death followed a long battle with cancer.

He was born on February 27, 1960, in Nyaradszereda, Romania to Iosif and Marta (Csongvay) Gyeresi. Erno earned his high school diploma from Bolyai Farkas Theoretical Lyceum in June of 1979. Later that year, he was accepted into the Babes-Bolyai University Faculty of Mathematics program. Before he could begin his undergraduate program, he completed nine months of mandatory military service. In June of 1985, Erno fulfilled all degree requirements for a BS in Mathematics, except for his final thesis. His natural and widely recognized aptitude for a bright career in mathematics was balanced by a calling to the gospel ministry, a calling pursued by his father, a grandfather and a total of 10 members of his extended family. So while working on his mathematics degree, Erno concurrently attended the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in Bucharest, Romania, where he graduated in June of 1985 with an undergraduate degree in theology. By the early 2000s, he had completed all but his dissertation for a PhD in Systematic Theology from 日韩AV, and in 2009 he completed a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in marketing, also from Andrews.

Erno married Ildiko Ilona Galfi on August 4, 1985, in Tirgu Mures, Romania. They lived in Cluj Napoca for 13 years, where Erno served in various roles in the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a pastor and secretary/treasurer for the North Transylvania Conference. As a faithful servant of the Lord, Erno touched many lives during his years of ministry. In 1998, he moved his family to Berrien Springs, Michigan, to attend the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at 日韩AV. As a student, Erno worked in several departments, including Physics Enterprises, the James White Library, and 日韩AV Press. In 2005, he began full-time employment at the Press, and in 2011 he was named associate director, responsible for all business management and marketing.

In addition to his service as a pastor and church administrator in Romania, Erno’s professional influence and legacy will long be felt for his 13 years at 日韩AV Press. Most significantly, he was the managing editor of the “Andrews Study Bible,” first released in the New King James Version in 2010; managing editor of the same study Bible in the New International Version (forthcoming); editorial consultant for the Romanian edition of the study Bible (2014); and managing editor of the “Andrews Bible Commentary” (forthcoming). All of this was in addition to his profound editorial and business influence on the regular operations of the Press, the only regularly established academic publishing house operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Erno is survived by his wife of 29 years, Ildiko Gyeresi of Niles, Michigan; his son Lehel Gyeresi of Houston, Texas; his daughter Harmat (Kyle) Beebe of Altamonte Springs, Florida; his parents Iosif and Marta Gyeresi of Tirgu Mures, Romania, and his sister Judit (Viorel) Dan of Madrid, Spain.

Dear Gyeresis, As a former employee of AU Press I have fond memories of working with Erno. He was, as you know better than I do, a wonderful, loving man with a deep faith and commitment to the SDA church. I will remember his laughter, his wisdom, and his insight into the word of God. I had several conversations with him prior to graduating and moving to another department at Andrews and he shared with me some of the stress and anxiety he felt. However, he seemed to approach it with realism and with an acceptance of his situation that I felt was courageous and bold. In my mind, he was a fantastic man of God, a wonderful manager, and a friend. I am deeply cut to have lost such a person, but as the hymnist penned, "I trace the rainbow through the rain and trust the promise is not vain that morn will brighter be." We serve a God who is more powerful than death itself, and I know Erno served Him too, and admirably at that. Know that my wife and I are praying for you and that we are asking our extended family and church family to pray as well which means hundreds of people lifting you up to Jesus for strength and comfort in your time of loss. God bless you. -- David Stratton

We're so, so sorry to hear of Erno's passing. He sleeps now, awaiting Jesus's wakening call, but you are left to mourn and so we mourn with you. Erno's quiet but steady and thorough way was an example of godliness that will not soon be forgotten. He served God faithfully and fully and that was a blessing to those receiving the fruits of his labors as well as to those who witnessed it. Our prayers will continue as earnestly as before, but now we will pray for God's peace and comfort for you and the family. May you find yourselves being carried in the hollow of God's loving hand, and surrounded by a caring community here at Andrews. Love, Dalry and Stephen Payne

At least you will get to see him again in heaven, after his long rest from pain and illness.

Erno did a wonderful work for our Romanian edition of Andrews Study Bible. While fighting with cancer, he sacrificed many hours and days in order to get the project ready for print in the language of his country. His deeds will be known on that day.
