Position summary

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: As member of the Counseling & Testing Center clinical team, maintains an assigned case load providing individual, couple, and group counseling as well as supervision within licensing parameters and consultations regarding mental health; Available for after-office hours, clinical consultations, and student crisis interventions.  Reports to the Director of Counseling & Testing Center and in consultation with the Director, providse leadership in mental health prevention including faculty/staff trianing as well as initiatives for the student population, with the goal of assisting students in achieving more effective personal, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment. 

Qualifications summary

• Master’s degree in Counseling or Clinical Mental Health from an accredited academic institution


• LPC license or license eligible in Michigan. Preference will be given to a candidate with clinical supervision endorsement


• Preferred minimum of three years of experience experience as well as work with the undergraduate and graduate student age population

Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinate prevention programming for the university student population.


• Strong generalist skills in time-limited individual counseling, group psychotherapy, outreach/consultation, and crisis intervention


• Assist with the provision of clinical supervision of counseling interns


• Coordinate/participate in internal research and professional development.


• Maintain clinical records and provide clinical documentation and communication with in-house and external practitioners as necessary for ethical clinical treatment


• Provide leadership in matters related to mental health prevention


• Oversee the offering of prevention educational experiences for students (ie. Substance use & Anger Management psycho-educational classes, support groups.)


• Collaborate with other campus departments, including the Wellness Dept. in the coordination of awareness programming throughout the year (ie. Depression Awareness, Eating Disorder Awareness, Substance Abuse Awareness months, etc.)


• Collaborate with Student life, Residence Hall Deans, School of Health Professions, and other campus departments in the offering of outreach programming, including Tuesday Choices, annual Wellness Fair, and Residence Hall mental health presentations


• Coordinate prevention/Screening activities


• Create and maintain collaborative relationships, communication and outreach methods with collegiate colleagues to effectively facilitate retention efforts and service students.


•  Assist faculty with students who are experiencing difficulties relating to personal, vocational and academic concerns or related educational issues.


• Coordinate need assessments and other assessments as needed.

Perform related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee.

 

Supervisory responsibilities

LPC license or license eligible in Michigan. Preference will be given to candidate with clinical supervision endorsement

Qualified to supervise interns and other student groups in the coordination of prevention programs and in the provision of counseling services

Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory


• Commitment to working collaboratively within the Student Life Division, establishing and maintaining close working relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators


• Previous work with a diverse student population preferred:


• Interpersonal, organization and strong communication skills required.

Technical competencies

Must be able to create detailed reports according to best practices, navigating the Center database and software systems.

Interpersonal interactions

Must be able to develop professional relationships on a diverse campus and in the community, and be able to comfortably interact with students, faculty, staff, parents, and community providers

Physical demands

Must be able to respond to urgent crisis stiuations that may occurr  durring nontraditional work hours.  Must be able to physically move throughout campus in the delivery of prevention programming. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or listen. The employee frequently is required to use hands or finger to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, or stoop. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Work environment

The Counseling & Testing Center is a vibrant mental health agency within a university setting. The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate. There are no particular facility hazards. Occasionally, there are weekend and irregular hours.
